Lionel Lim in the Singapore Livestreaming Competition 2021?

Yes it came as a shock to many people when I signed up for the Livestreaming Competition 2021. Now why would I do such a thing?

After all, not many seasoned trainers, consultants or coaches will dare to put their reputation aside and start afresh.

But I decided to do it.

A nationwide competition organized by the Singapore Institute of Retail Studies and partnered with Workforce Singapore, the live streaming competition can be considered a first in Singapore’s recent history.

To many, livestreaming is still a relatively new concept, especially in Singapore.

I was motivated to join for three reasons.

Firstly, in a live stream, there is no chance for NG or retake. As the name suggests, it’s LIVE. And you only have one chance to deliver within the given timing. If you make a mistake, it will be so glaring to your live audience. This by itself is a gamechanger, in addition to the videos and presentations I have always been doing. And what’s more, the livestreaming competition was going to be on Shopee LIVE.

In life, you seize every opportunity that comes.

Period.

Secondly, I will be able to compete with the best of the best (as there were professionals from all walks of life – including emcees, speakers, salespeople, influencers and livestreamers). It’s only when you pit your skills against others do you know where you stand.

And you need to sharpen your saw from time to time to always be on top of your game. Being notified that I was one of the 150 accepted contestants was in itself a humbling experience as competition was really stiff.

In life, you are either growing or degenerating.

I choose the former.

Thirdly, I can beef up my speaker portfolio by adding this bona fide experience. So besides the virtual classes, face-to-face workshops and videos on demand, I will now have a new offering that is live streaming services.

In life, you make your own rules and play by them.

I foresee that live streaming is going to be the new force in the years to come for companies to drive engagement and sales; and even schools to reach out to their students…in the same way how social media took over all our lives when it first exploded.

So the earlier we master the art of livestreaming, the better.

And through every stage of the competition, we were assigned a particular product to promote. It’s more than just sales. It’s the whole package, which includes:

  • Brand representation
  • Familiarity with the assigned product
  • Style of livestreamer
  • Rapport with live audience
  • Entertainment value

And I’m happy to share I achieved the following milestones in the Livestreaming Competition 2021 which attracted a total of 50,000 viewers on Shopee LIVE:

  • Shortlisted as the 30 contestants in the preliminaries
  • Selected as the Top 10 finalists in the finals
  • Came in third in the finals

Yes, I am still amazed by this wonderful journey and the rich experience I have gleaned. But more importantly, I am just so happy I took the plunge into the world of livestreaming and am now enriched by the baptism of fire.

Of course, the prize for coming in third place came as a sweet bonus as I have a new Sony ZV-1 digital camera and other Sony Singapore sponsored gadgets for all my future livestreams.
