Style Coaching: Personal Shopping

Posted by: lionel

I believe my client is just as excited as I am, if not more. Well, there’s every reason for him to be excited. We are going shopping today!

When I first met my client (let’s call him A) a week ago, it was primarily to find out a little more about him as he indicated that he would like a new wardrobe accompanied with a new look.

Planning a new wardrobe is not just about discarding what you already have and buying everything new. It’s about knowing your current lifestyle and in his case also, his new job requirements. Think of it like a doctor who checks and diagnoses first; then clarifies before prescribing the solution.

As a personal shopper, one of my chief aims is to help clients select clothes that not only flatter their body shape and style but are also versatile. In grooming terms, it’s to help the client build a capsule wardrobe so that some staple pieces can always be used in each and every occasion.

After helping him determine his body shape, personality style and best colours to wear, we agreed to meet again today at Vivocity for personal shopping. To some who ask why Vivocity, my reply is simple. It has everything under one roof and unlike Orchard Road, one is not subjected to the sun and rain when one hops from one shop to another. Besides, we are not buying any branded stuff so Vivocity is the ideal place to shop.

If you think being a personal shopper is just acting on whims and fancies, or the spur of the moment to walk into any shop; think again. To be a great personal shopper who adds maximum value to clients, one has to fulfil three criteria. First, being a personal shopper is about doing my homework first, looking at the list of items that the client wants to buy and recce-ing the shops and pre-selecting the suitable pieces a few days before the appointment and then bringing the client there on the actual day. Second, being a personal shopper is about working within the client’s budget and not exceeding it. The best would be to pick the best deals and help him or her stretch the dollar. Third, being a personal shopper is also about maximizing the client’s time and not wasting it.

After doing a thorough check of A’s wardrobe and discussing with him about the dressing requirements about his new job and wanting to get some casual items as well for weekends, he drew up a list of to buy items for me. The list read:

- 2 Pants (not black) @ $100 each
- 2 V-Neck T shirts (short sleeves) @ about $50 each
- 1 Long Sleeved Shirt, Non Pocket (Autumn Colour) @ about $100

It was an extremely fruitful personal shopping trip as I had drawn up the itinerary for him. The modus operandi was simple - walk into Shop X to try on these few pieces. If client likes, he would buy. It's not just about the price, but also about the cut and comfort. If client doesn't like them, go to backup Shop Y which sells similar items to try.

At the first shop, we had already settled one pants and the two V-neck T shirts as A liked what he saw and after trying, bought them. At the second shop, we found the second pair of pants and long sleeved shirt. As the overall spending was lower than the original budget A had set aside (thanks both to me for doing the legwork on the grounds relentlessly and for the ongoing Great Singapore Sales), we walked into a backup shop and he bought another long sleeved shirt and working socks too!

Seeing him carrying all his new purchases in the carrier bags, it was another mission accomplished :)

We All Want To Look Good

Posted by: lionel

It is an open secret that all of us want to look good. Who does not look his or her best in a society that places such a high premium on the first impression?

For those of us who are in the midst of a fitness regime or designed mealplan, I congratulate you as you are one step closer to your dreams. As the footsteps of Chinese New Year draw closer, I'm very sure my Chinese clients will be eager to shed that extra kilo or pump harder so as to impress their relatives and friends during the customary house-visits.

It was based on this premise that I teased one of my long-term male client that he would be able to flaunt his hard earned muscles again when he returns to his hometown. He smiled sheepishly initially, then added that he was content with the glow of admiration he received last year. Whatever extra reaction he received this year would be a bonus. I'm genuinely happy for him as he's now savoring the fruits of his hard labour at the gym.

Today when I checked my facebook, one of my clients wrote that he somehow felt slimmer and attributed to an invisible force behind him looking good. Another one of my female clients joined in the discussion and proclaimed that I was the reason behind his feel slim effect. She further enthused that I had this mysterious power to make her feel slim somehow...even talking to me makes her feel slimmer.

As I read their discussions, I begin to ponder if they have given me too much credit for what I have helped them achieve. My start and end points are the same - to make you look good, both inside out and outside in.

What I basically do for all my clients is to prescribe a proven set of training methodology comprising a sensible workout routine and delectable mealplan. More importantly, I believe in strong personal support.

It is vital for both trainer and client to maintain close communication at all times so that the results will be maximised in the shortest possible time. I believe in training smart, not hard. This is a maxim I have followed all my life, especially through varsity days.

Yet credit must be given to all my clients who have chosen to believe in me and stick with me. It is through their own hard work, efforts & sweat that they have begun to see the physical transformations happening right before their eyes

If there's any mysterious force behind all this positive buzz, it's the individual's innate ability to shift into high gear each time trainer and client meet. I love this energy as it is infectious in a good sense :)

Welcome 2010!

Summing up, 2009 had been a good year for me. I couldn't have asked for anything better as it gave me ample opportunities to touch lives through both my personal training programmes & workshops. In particular, I fulfilled my dream of conducting my own Train The Train Certification Programme. What started off as a bold ambition early in the year when I wrote the syllabus materialised into something that will now see future runs on a more consistent basis. Not forgetting that my grooming workshops have now reached out to more adults & students.

I feel really blessed to be able to do what I enjoy doing. This gives me the impetus to move confidently ahead.

This year, I have more exciting plans in the pipeline. Life is never about being constant. It's all about change for the better.

Happy New Year! And may all my readers' new year resolutions come true too :)

Upcoming Talks On Grooming And Etiquette

Posted by: lionel

I received an email from one of my industry friends today asking if I could do 3 grooming & etiquette talks in Nov 09 for a primary school.

I've done talks for adults, teenagers and secondary school students. But as for primary school students, this is going to be my first time.

It should not be too much to worry about as I'll just treat it as a challenge and customise the information to their level. As good trainers, we always tailor our presentation to cater to our specific audience.  That's the importance of being client-specific. The same goes for this case.

Having been a relief teacher for a short while at two primary schools before, I fully understand the limited attention span and hyperactiveness of children at that level. So, it's not so much the density of the content that matters, but rather how to package the content to make it interesting and arrest their attention. Lots of examples, hands-on, colours and fun activities would definitely be in the works.

Alright, I'll get down to work after my Malaysia trip. Yeah!

I love doing talks and workshops as they provide me with another platform (besides personal training) to share my experience with others. And I really feel blessed to be able to do so.

Prior to this, I heard from the organisers EMRS Team 4 that about 40 odd students had registered. Wow. I also learnt that there were going to be more ladies than males. I think this can be expected because most men are just too occupied with other areas in their lives to pay greater attention to the importance of grooming. But for the handful of men who did attend, I'm sure they did benefit immensely.

Learning how to create a positive first impression is no longer an important skill to master in today's world. It is an essential skill to master. I can attest personally to this.

Nanyang Polytechnic. 1.30pm. I arrived.

I was really impressed and appreciative of the efforts the 9 students from EMRS Team 4 put in to put this talk together. Besides selling tickets to interested NYP students, they also worked hard to create publicity for the talk, not forgetting decorated the reception area with a star-filled banner and the LT with colourful balloons. Thanks guys!

As in all talks, it takes a while for the participants to become familiar with my style of training. But once they were warmed up, it was all systems go.

I could tell that most were surprised when I shared and later showed old photos of myself. Yes, I have indeed transformed myself through the years. Gone are the days of my stick-thin stature and lack of confidence :)

As a trainer, it is my responsibility to engage everyone in the audience. This meant coming up with interesting quizzes and games to get everyone involved either on a personal, partner or group level.

Participant sharing her Top 10 list of image destroyers for men

From image destroyers to body shapes to personality styles to face shapes, I covered them all. I was happy to see the students getting just as excited as I was. Of course they would as the better we know ourselves, the more proficient we will be leaving a lasting first impression. Half the battle is won when we create that good impression.

Following the first segment on visual confidence, I also weaved into the talk useful elements on diet and exercise as these were also my areas of expertise.

Sharing simple yet effective ways of keeping their weight in check, I saw many faces light up instantly. The happy faces were coupled with megawatt smiles when I told them to stop counting their calories. Life is not about food deprivation. It is about food substitution.

Less for the technical glitch which led to the rebooting of the PC, I felt the talk went well. The energy of the group was good and they did participate when asked to :)

This is the best evidence...haha...Yes everyone, it's time to massage your friendly neighbour.

In appreciation of my time & efforts, I was presented with an honorarium & token.

I'm looking forward to my next talk next month. Yeah!
