Happy Dragon Chinese New Year 2012

Posted by: lionel

Having bad farewell to Christmas, I bet all of us (who are Chinese or have Chinese friends) are now in the happy mood of welcoming the coming of Chinese New Year. Yes, as the Chinese proverb goes, “a whole year’s plan starts in spring” (一年之计在于春).

The dawn of spring heralds the start of a fresh beginning, a whole new year of dreams and aspirations. Since the Spring Festival (春节) is widely regarded as one of the most important in the Chinese calendar, let’s talk about colours to wear during the festive season. For those of you who read my earlier blog post dwelling a little on the
psychology of coloursthis is a further elaboration of some pertinent colours to wear and avoid.

We all know that colours play an important role in our lives. Not only should we wear colours that complement our skintone, certain colours which we wear too have a specific psychological effect on both us the wearer as well as the people around us.

For Chinese New Year, one of the best colours to wear is red. Red is the colour of blood. The blood in our bodies gives us life. In the same vein, red as a colour symbolizes vitality and warmth.

As the coming of spring also marks the end of the harsh winter cold, it’s the perfect time for us to start planting our crops and making our resolutions. Red is the colour that propels us forward, makes us bold and dynamic and gets us to take action. You certainly do not want to be planning and strategizing in autumn (as that’s when we are harvesting the fruits of our labour). Instead, you do all of it in spring.

Besides red having all these positive connotations, we also believe red is the colour of prosperity. We want our bank accounts to be healthy, our rice cookers at home to be full, our investments to be smooth and our businesses to propser.

Most ladies will not hesitate to wear red for the Chinese New Year. But if you are a guy and you are a little in awe of the bright red colour, then take a leaf from my example and choose to wear pink instead.

Unknown to many, pink is the colour of universal love. As we know, pink is the combination of red and white. While I’ve already shared the qualities of red, let’s see what the colour white symbolizes.

Besides many who believe white symbolizes purity and cleanliness, to me specifically, white also signifies starting on a fresh slate. It’s as if we have spring-cleaned everything, weeding all the negative energies, leaving us with a pure, pristine white canvas to draw and visualize. Whatever colours you wish to paint, it’s really up to you as you own that canvas and are responsible for the actions…and ultimately results. That was why I chose to wear pink this year as I combined the best of both the colours red and white.

Quite obviously, the colour to avoid at all cost is black. It’s perfectly alright to wear black on other days and come across with a sense of mystery. But during Chinese New Year, wear black and I bet you will get a heavy scolding by your elders. Wearing black during Chinese New Year is akin to partying with gloom, death and all things negative. It’s like a doomsday scenario. And it’s definitely not what we want at the start of a new year. Instead, we want to be reinvigorated, reenergized and revitalized. We want to start the New Year on a positive note.

So remember, wear red or pink this Chinese New Year. Here’s wishing everyone a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year. Gong Xi Gong Xi!

Fitness Model Indoor Photo Shoot

Posted by: lionel

I'm really excited today as it's my indoor fitness photo shoot day. As this is my first time shooting inside a studio, I cannot wait to see the end results of all the photos. For the record, I took 191 fitness shots today. Most of them will come in handy when I start working on my first fitness book.

Here's to share with everyone some of the photos after 3 hours of hard work at the studio :)

Fitness Model Outdoor Photo Shoot

Posted by: lionel

Today is my off day and I'm going to enjoy the sun and get a little tan. Plus, this will be the second time I'm doing an outdoor sports shoot. From my first experience way back in 2008, I can envisage how much fun it will be again!

This time round, I shot from clear skies to gloomy skies threatening rain back to clear skies again! It always feels good to be surrounded by nature. I love the peace and quiet of the open field, the inviting wind & the sun's rays occasionally warming my skin up.

Enjoy the fruits of my labour :)

Grooming Talk for Nanyang Polytechnic

Posted by: lionel

I went to Nanyang Polytechnic this afternoon for a discussion with the teacher-in-charge and a group of Year 2 student leaders. And the good news is that the grooming talk is confirmed on 24 Sep 09.

Being able to bring my grooming talk titled “Create A First Impression That Counts” to more people and transforming their lives is a real blessing in itself. I’m happily counting down to the date. J

I received an invitation two weeks ago to give a 3 hr grooming workshop at Queensway Secondary School this morning. It's been a while since I did my last grooming workshop. I've been doing more fitness related workshops and talks recently. But realistically speaking, it really depends on which angle I pitch it. Fitness can and is part of grooming after all!

Armed with my self-confidence, I walked into the class of 20+ Sec 4 students. I was already forewarned that this class would be hard to manage. Doing a quick cursory scan, I noted that there were only 6 girls while the rest were all hot-blooded boys.

In any workshop, it's of utmost importance to build rapport with the audience. Once this is established, the delivery will be much smoother.

To make the learning easier, I created acronymns and games for the students. Acronyms were designed to help students remember the grooming concepts easily. Games on the other hand were used as a training aid to cement the learning so that the students learned in a non-threatening format while having fun. This combination certainly helped a great deal as it got the students warmed up and ready for more.

Having been a student once, I know what hot buttons I should be pressing. True enough, when I touched on the main topics such as dressing (what to wear and what not to wear), image destroyers and body shapes of both men and women, I was bombarded with questions. And when I moved into my fitness stuff, it really got the boys excited. Some even asked me how much I charged.

I wish my school management had taken the pains to organise a similar grooming workshop for me when I was still schooling. But then again, back then, such grooming workshops were almost unheard of. It would be considered a luxury in those days to attend such workshops. Interestingly, in today's context, learning how to groom oneself is no longer an important skill to acquire, but an essential skill to master. Kudos to the management of Queensway Secondary School for taking the lead in this and providing the students with a headstart in life.

Summing up my 3hr workshop, I'm game for the next one. Bring it on! What's most interesting is that every component of my grooming workshop is customisable according to the needs of the audience. That's what makes it fun as no two workshops are identical! Talk to me if you wish to find out more :)
