Grooming Talk For A*Star Biopolis

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: grooming

Looking at the orderly line forming outside the Creation Theatrette at the Matrix Building of Biopolis, it’s simply mind boggling how fast this year is coming to an end. Maybe it’s been a year of surprises big or small for all of us. But I think maybe we’ve all been too busy to keep track of time as it slips away.

Here at A*STAR Biopolis to give my signature grooming talk, it was really gratifying to see so many faces crowded in the theatrette especially since it’s the year-end holidays with most staff on leave. With nationalities hailing from different countries, it was my honour to be amongst them researchers and scientists.

Many times in life, we are too caught up with the rat race that we forget sometimes we just have to start living for ourselves. Many of us dress to conform to certain office norms. Look around and you will see the majority of men dressed in the same hues of white, blue, black and grey. For ladies (whether they are on the plus side or slim side), they always think of black as their saving colour as it’s slimming.

But once you have attended today’s grooming talk, you will realise there’s a whole universe out there besides the classical colours or even start thinking black is THE one and only slimming colour.

If we don’t start to dress for ourselves (within the accepted limits of course – no one is asking you to dye your hair purple or red), you start feeling more confident as it’s your personality you begin to exude. And naturally when you feel more confident, your work performance improves. It may sound incredulous but trust me, it works. If it worked for me, why shouldn’t it work for you?

So sit back, relax and let’s rock this talk together…and get you all spruced up for the new year ahead!

Grooming Talk For A*Star Fusionopolis

With three big screens behind me, it was like a scene from my solo pop concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. But alas it was not. Nonetheless, I have to admit this was certainly one of the grandest reception for my grooming talk. Billed as a full-house event by the organizers, I’m at A*STAR Fusionopolis. I’ve heard so much about Fusionopolis as it is the hotbed for our scientists and researchers. Privileged therefore am I in their company.

Living in a highly urbanized society like Singapore, regardless of what your preference is, you are judged by the way you look outwardly. If you are sloppily dressed, the first impression others will form of you is that you are thought of as lazy or less than intelligent. You may have an IQ score of 200, but trust me, if you don’t dress the part, no one will ever take you seriously.

Interestingly, it has everything to do with our hairs. Hairs? Where you may ask…

My answer: Hairs…everywhere! Read on for my hair advice.

It has to do with our hairs…either too much or lack of them.

grooming_talk_a_star_fusionopolis_img

In all cultures, having hair is seen as a sign of virility. For men, especially, it is an expression of our masculinity. But having hair cover the entire body to the extent of it becoming a black tangled mess akin to a jungle is not sexy at all. You can let your ideas run wild and get creative on your jobs. But letting your body hair run wild is like running amok? No thanks!

Moving upwards, unkempt facial hair is a big no-no. Unless it’s for strict religious reasons, I would advise men to shave. Keeping a beard piles the years on you and makes you much older than you actually are. But when you shave, you miraculously take the years off you. And I’m sure most girls out there would appreciate kissing a clean shaven face, not a face with overgrown weeds.

Moving further upwards still, something that turns me off totally are the strands of hair sticking out. For men, I’m referring to your nostril and ear hairs. It is absolutely nauseating to talk to a person with hair sticking out of the nostrils especially. Heaven forsake you to have any dried debris on those stray strands.

And finally, for your male crowning glory, do not use too much hair products. You are living in 2011, not the 1960s when Brylcreem and Tancho reigned supreme. Go for shape and definition that speaks natural, not stiffness and heaviness that spells generations ago.

a_star_fusionopolis_grooming_talk_img

For ladies, if you are taking public transport, either in the bus or train…and you happen to be wearing a sleeveless top and hanging onto the railings, beware! Beware of the unsightly hairs sticking out from your armpits. Yes, armpit hair is the number one turn-off. If you do not wish to wax, then consider IPL or laser treatments to retard the growth of the hair there. Nothing is more hilarious than a lady in a nice gown but unshaven armpits.

Moving downwards, the same theory applies to leg hair. Silken and smooth are in. Bushes and shrubs are out. Worse, if you wear stockings and one sees pikes sticking out.

And according to many of my female informants, one image destroyer most often mentioned is men with thinning hair and doing nothing about it. Some mentioned that some men ignore the issue completely and use a few strands to cover their fast balding foreheads. Should you observe a W pattern developing, seek help from a hair specialist or dermatologist.

Ladies Grooming Talks For KS Energy

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: grooming

I feel extra bubbly today. It’s not my birthday. Neither is it Christmas yet. But there’s just something special about my mood. Every footstep I take, every smile I flash is one that betrays that momentous feeling within.

Maybe it’s because I’ll be having two back-to-back grooming talks in a moment’s time at KS Energy. Or maybe it’s because of the extra warm reception from Janice, the lady from HR whom I click so well with even though we are meeting for the first time.

Did I tell you before a happy mood can be infectious? It fills your body with an expected zest of energy and you feel on top of the world.

Standing in front of the group of all ladies only, I have long banished the ghosts of butterflies in the stomach. I am in the moment and clearly enjoying myself. After the customary self-introduction, I did the unthinkable. Like a little child who wants to shout out to the world after he gets the candy he so desires, I let out the secret.

And now that it’s been revealed, it’s no longer a secret.

I told the ladies KS Energy is the 100th company I have trained thus far since I embarked on this training journey.

They applauded.

I bowed.

I’m really humbled by the positive vibes from all my participants, including the ladies at today’s two grooming talks

Thank you everyone past and present, for allowing me to share my knowledge with you. I’m truly blessed :)

And to reward myself, I’m going to buy myself a small present and gear up towards the next 100 companies.

In the ultra competitive hair industry, having a pair of deft hands and being able to snip, cut and design a new hairdo for customers is already the expected norm. Nowadays, the wow factor is heightened by the level of service provided.

I was invited for a free haircut at one upmarket hair salon in Orchard Road today.

Keeping an open mind and not wanting to pass any favourable judgement based on the brand name itself, I was sufficiently surprised at first sight how the hair salon seemed to resemble a spa retreat more than a typical hair salon, what with the choice of dark timber hues oozing a warmth, homely feeling. Perhaps this was the impression the hair salon wanted to project – that coming for a snip, cut or treatment was akin to coming home to the familiar.

The moment I stepped into the interior chambers of the hair salon, I knew I was in for a treat – a treat tantalizing enough to excite the different senses.

Visually, all the stylists were immaculately dressed in classic white and black. It was as if they all walked out from a fashion shoot. Even the shampoo boys too were dressed in the same manner. This needless to say was the corporate identity in this upmarket hair salon. Watching them attend to the other customers was a visual delight as while the stylist sat cutting hair, his assistants stood at arm’s length observing.

Kinesthetically, I felt more than welcome. Beyond the bright chandelier lights, vastness of space and brightly lighted haircut service points was a service lady, who surprisingly despite her age, spoke very good English. I was impressed. She too was dressed in white and black! Drinks were on the house and I could order anything from the menu. Less than one minute later, she returned with my drink and further asked if I wanted biscuits or male magazines to read while waiting. I smiled.

Auditorily, from the snatches of conversations, bantering and small chatter generated across the various haircut service points, it was obvious both the stylist and customer were creating small talk. It wasn’t just the normal small talk about how you wanted to cut your hair or whether you were going to try the latest hair spa. Rather, it was reminiscent of conversations between old classmates, best of pals or the chummiest of friends. Perhaps this was one of the ways this upmarket hair salon used to build rapport between stylist and customer.

Soon, it was my turn to be consulted. But before that, I would need to get my hair washed. In walked a shampoo boy who led me to the wash basins. My hair was washed, conditioned and rinsed and tousled dry by the hairdryer. Then he left me to wait for the stylist to work his magic on my hair.

As the stylist walked over in his hues of white and black, I knew I was in very safe hands. Not only would he be skilled in his area of expertise, so too could I expect him to chat with me as if we were the best of friends. And true enough, he did just both. Instead of the normal using of the razor at other hair salons, the stylist took my hair inch by inch and snipped away patiently. In between snipping, trimming and cutting, conversation flowed both ways.

About half an hour later, with a new haircut, I walked out of the hair salon. My new haircut aside, what impressed me most was the level of service quality accorded to all customers - new or old, which encompassed so many enriching life lessons. This was a big lesson I personally learnt today :)

Corporate Grooming Talk For Getronics Singapore

You know you have left an indelible impression in the minds of others when they come up to you to thank you, shake your hands and are genuinely interested in you as a person. This and much more I have achieved today at the grooming talk at Getronics Singapore.

Located at the same building as Toyota Motor Asia Pacific, I was told to prep myself by my minder beforehand that the staff had come especially for my talk.

In a world where branding isn’t just for mega organizations like Nike or Coca Cola, the name Lionel Lim has now become synonymous and associated with the who’s who in the grooming industry. I am gratified that people think of me when they think of my field.

So live up to the expectations of my audience I must and of course, exceed them and deliver more. Just like in a customer transaction, I have learnt to delight my customers over time and pack more value in it than a McDonalds Happy Meal.

If you think the staff working in an IT firm are always serious and wear stern looks, you cannot be more wrong. At Getronics Singapore, a predominantly IT consulting and network technology company, the staff are a happy-go-lucky, jovial lot who are not afraid to poke fun at each other all in the name of learning. So shows the good camaraderie and bonding amongst them.

getronics_singapore_grooming_talk_img

Perhaps one of the most light-hearted moments must be the instant I touched on food debris stuck between the teeth which is a turn-off and most stopped eating…until I had to reassure them it was alright as long as they checked their own appearance after meals. Perhaps rinse, gargle or brush their teeth? Not only is this good oral hygiene, it also makes our smile more endearing.

Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Knowledge is meant to be shared and the more people I share with, the more happiness this brings about.

In any service-related industry, good hospitality is never good enough. It has to be great hospitality that leaves an indelible impression on the minds of the customers. Therefore, it was little surprise to learn that the theme for this year’s retreat for Far East Hospitality Hotels & Residences was titled ‘Central Housekeeping – From Good To Great’.

Originally the title of a bestseller by Jim Collins, “few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.” Such words of wisdom.

Applying the same stroke of genius, the retreat aims to challenge all staff of central housekeeping to go that extra mile while providing housekeeping services to 6 Far East Hotels, 11 service residences and other business units.

With occupancy rates constantly at peak high, it is little wonder the Housekeeping team has had to cope with high daily room quotas and delivering clean and neat rooms speedily with consistently high standards of service. Finding new and better improvements of going about its daily tasks in order to boost efficiency and doing more with less is thus the way forward.

At the grooming workshop which was planned as a reward treat for the staff who have worked hard all year long, the participants from the various hotel units and residences came together to bond, learn and strategise.

In the cozy training room at the newly opened Oasia Hotel, the workshop was a laugh-a-minute, learn-a-minute, close-knitted affair among all. New staff blended in quickly with their more seasoned colleagues as all attempted to destress and discover new things about themselves.

Running the gamut from body measurements which they took on gamely; to fashion styles; to colour analysis which all were only too eager to watch me work my magic drapes on them; to dining etiquette, all of them were as passionate as I was to make the best of this grooming workshop.

This reminds me of Collin’s saying "You can be passionate all you want, but if you can’t be the best at it or it doesn’t make economic sense, then you might have a lot of fun, but you won’t produce great results."

To sum it all up, passion was definitely in the air. So was fun and of course I can only expect to see great results from this wonderful team who made me feel like family from the moment I stepped in. Thanks for the Far East hospitality.

Corporate Grooming Talks For Keppel FELS

And the completion of today’s corporate grooming talk at Keppel FELS marks the third run of this series. Originally, it was meant to be just one grooming talk for the staff. But owing to overwhelming response, HR requested me to do two more runs of it. Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm. I guess word must have gotten round Keppel FELS that spending one hour at lunchtime with me was well worth the investment.

Forming an orderly queue to register their names, the crowd filed in on time. But I must say some were turned away disappointedly as they didn't RSVP prior to the talk. Not wanting to disappoint anyone, we decided on Day 2 to allow walk-ins as well as long as they brought their own chair!

A subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, Keppel FELS has grown from a local shipyard into a global offshore group. As a global leader in the design, construction and repair of mobile offshore rigs, there is always a moment everyday when one has to come into contact with another colleague, supplier or member of public. And that’s when projecting a positive first impression helps create positive lasting experiences in each customer interaction.

As long as we continue to learn and grow each day, we will help add value to ourselves and the organization we represent.

So it was comforting to see both men and ladies in the room. In this age and time, more men have begun to pay more attention to their dressing, grooming and poise. It does not matter if they are wearing white overalls or executive wear. There will still come a time when you need to look presentable, neat and appropriately dressed for the occasion.

Amid discussions, demonstration and hands-on practice, the three interactive sessions went smoothly without any hiccups; although I must profess my special thanks to the third group today who were super super energetic.

Thanks and looking forward to seeing all of you again soon :)

Grooming Talk At Toyota Motor Asia Pacific

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: grooming

I’ve learnt about the market innovativeness of this Japanese model back in my school days. I’ve also driven one of them before. And in case you are still wondering, I’m talking about Toyota.

And here I am tonight at Toyota Motor Asia Pacific for their very first grooming talk. Held in conjunction as part of the staff welfare programme, the talk kicked off with a Japanese bento dinner.

I loved the arrangement of the tables in the room in island styles as it meant plenty of interaction space between the participants and myself. Many a times, I don’t see myself as a trainer. Instead, I see my role more as a friend who helps others become more confident of themselves in my own little, non-threatening ways. And tonight was no different.

Setting the pace of the night with an ice-breaker activity, followed by the heavier materials packed behind, the crowd responded with their enthusiasm, laughter and smiles galore. The discussions and activities were attended to with precision and seriousness, just like the hallmarks of the car. In short, there was something for everyone. And their faith in me was rewarded as the hour spent was definitely worth their time.

Weaving between the male and female aspects for grooming, there was little cause for worry as the males could learn more about female stuff and vice versa. I also spotted one couple who attended together in the audience. Learning should never be rote learning. It’s about taking useful, practical grooming tips and getting the participants to put them into practice into their everyday lives.

If not for my flight to catch later tonight, I would have loved to share more with this lovely crowd who despite their long day at work, bubbled with energy and enthusiasm.

Thank you Toyota Motor! And till we meet again, for our next grooming session :)
