My Healthy Dessert Snack: Bean Curd Tart

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: food

Is it possible for us to stop indulging in desserts or snacks when we are on an exercise programme? Well, my answer is that it is insane to deprive yourself of food, especially in a food paradise like Singapore.

However, what you can still do is be on the lookout for healthy desserts or healthy snacks. Yes, they do exist...if you know where to find them :)

I reckon there must be some egg tart fans out there? If you are one of them, then you are in luck! As we all know, an egg tart is delicious but may not be the healthiest snack out there as most tart recipes include butter, eggs and sugar.

Fret not...Introducing a healthier version without compromising the taste. The bean curd tart!

Being a huge soya bean fan and perhaps the most faithful one as well, it's a double treat. In fact, I prefer soya bean milk over fresh milk. And for all readers out there who are lactose intolerant, do consider soya bean milk as well.

So when I came across this shop tucked away in a quiet corner of the Selegie area, my curiosity was piqued. Out came me with a box of bean curd tarts. I was lucky as I was told that I would normally have to call to pre-order. That box which I bought was a last-minute cancelled order from a customer.

When I sank my teeth into the beancurd tart, I could immediately taste the silky smooth soya bean filling.  Indeed, from what I understand, soya beans and almonds were first grinded and then cooked with water and pandan leaves for the fragrance. In fact, it was oozing with so much freshness that it reminded me of a soya bean drink. I love the taste. Add to the fact that it was fresh out of the fridge which meant the crust was hard.

I simply love the taste :)

My Healthy Meal: Olive Rice Chicken

I'm in love...You can see it in my eyes which practically light up each and every moment. Yes, it's such a wonderful feeling. Even my energies have become higher and my footsteps lighter.

I really feel so blessed. But less any of you start getting jealous, I've fallen head over heels in love not with a human being but with a new dish in town which I discovered recently :)

Drum roll...Introducing my recommendation for a healthy meal - the olive rice chicken dish!

healthy_meal_olive_rice_chicken_img

When I first sank my teeth into the dish, I was immediately won over. What pleased my gastronomical palette immensely was the flavour-full olive rice with chunks of olives. I’ve long read about the goodness of olives. It’s great for the hair and skin. What’s more, it contains lots of nutritional value like Vitamins E, K and A as well as other nutrients. Add those onto the oleic acid inherent which aids in keeping our arteries supple and helps prevent cancer. Best of it all is that it’s natural!

As a chicken meat lover, I will make it a point to include chicken meat into my daily diet as I need the protein after a good workout. Dice them up in this case, then grill them and serve (with or without the black pepper sauce).

But knowing how fastidious I can get sometimes with food so that my workouts do not go wasted, I have asked for a customised version of the olive rice chicken dish. Life is all about modifications and substitutions, isn't it? :)

If you must know, the original dish comes with one serving of green vegetables plus one serving of coleslaw. I requested to change it to two servings of green vegetables. No thanks for the coleslaw as it’s soaked in mayonnaise. I'll go with the fresh green leafy lettuce anytime! Plus I asked them to do away with the black pepper sauce which was poured over the chicken meat in the menu selection.

Needless to say, I only eat this particular dish whenever I visit the food court at Bugis Junction. You definitely have to try it if you are there. Yummy!

Your Valentine's Day Dinner Eating Out Survival Guide

Tagged in: food

How quickly time passes by...It was only Christmas some weeks back, followed by New Year 2011, then the recent Chinese New Year...And guess what? We are now going to celebrate Valentine's Day in just a few days' time!

Do you remember how you celebrated Valentine's Day last year? You probably had a sumptuous meal at a restaurant and bought each other presents...and possibly renewed your love vows.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day where love is in the air, here's to show I love all my readers too by spreading my love in the form of knowledge to all of you. Whether or not you will be spending Valentine's Day with your significant other or with close friends, just be mindful of that this piece is for you. Yes, it's my pre V-Day present to everyone! Here comes the Valentine's Day dinner eating our survival guide. Read on and help to spread the love :)

It's Valentine's Day! And whether you know it or not subconsciously, it's a day worth celebrating with your loved one. You may be saying to yourself that if you’re going to spend all that money on dinner, get dressed up a little, and dine out, you want to get your money’s worth. Well, at least the majority of us think this way as we all want to stretch our dollar!

Yet pause for a second and think again...you probably will be in a more joyous mood to enjoy the moment if you focus your thoughts on enjoying the
ambiance (with the candle on the table complete with some red roses and a violinist serenading you), the amorous company, the luxury of being served and poring over the special Valentine's Day dinner set choices.

If you can think of these perks, then you will not be tempted to try to get the biggest steak, even if it's cheaper than the smaller salmon. Remember, regardless of what programme you are now - weight loss or muscle building, the aim is to be the same. You need to be consistent in your meals and not use Valentine's Day as an excuse to binge or go off-tangent.

Here's 6 of my Valentine's Day dinner eating our survival tips to keep the calories low on the special day.

Tip 1: Do Not Upsize It

Some restaurants will attempt to milk more money out of you by asking you to top up your order to that of a set meal by throwing in starters, drinks and even desserts. STOP!

If you've been to that restaurant before and you know how big the portions are (some Western restaurants have not acclimatised their dishes to the Asian food palette and still serve huge portions of food), ask the service staff to half the potatoes or rice.

Tip 2: Ask And It Shall Be Given

I'm sure most of you have heard of this saying "knock and the door will be opened, ask and you shall be given."

It's not that you are being thick-skinned by asking for more. On the contrary, almost all restaurants will be more than happy to give you extra vegetables instead of side dishes like potatoes and rice. So do not be shy...Just ask!

Tip 3: Start Off Your Drink With A Glass Of Water

I know there's reason for celebrating as it's Valentine's Day after all. But for you to avoid the pressure of having alcoholic beverages and other caloric drinks, mentally programme yourself that you will start with a glass of water.

If you start by ordering a glass of water (it's free anyway in most restaurants...unless those which serve you Evian water of course), the perception that you have given the sales staff is that there's still a high chance they can upsell you on a more expensive drink later.

But what happens if you have started drinking the water while waiting for your food to arrive? You would have filled yourself up, leaving your tummy no more space for that alcoholic drink.

Tip 4: Share Your Food

Just like what we share our love and shower concern on each other, it makes perfect sense to share your food too. Two people can share an appetizer and a main course (or even just a main course). This way both of you can have a couple different things without breaking the calorie budget (and the wallet budget!). Nowadays just about any entrée in most estaurants is usually more than enough food for two people anyway; restaurants just tend to over serve to satisfy their customers.

Tip 5: Don't Drink Your Calories

Five hundred calories of juice can go down in seconds without filling you up at all. Now that's an awful waste. Wouldn't you rather have a juicy piece of meat or a huge salad?

Drinking calories will never satisfy hunger but it sure will put the breaks on your weight loss progress. If you really need to have something to drink that has some taste or flavour to it, try to keep it to diet drinks, or coffee’s and tea’s with minimal milk, creamer or sugar.

Tip 6: Drink A Wine Instead

When other people are indulging in very high calorie sinful dessert you can skip the dessert and instead opt for a glass of wine or another drink. In this way, you won't get pressured into having a 700 calorie dessert, but instead you can get away with 200 calories or so with a glass of wine. Another plus point is that it’s more socially acceptable to leave behind a few sips of wine compared to a few bites of dessert! Remember, first impressions matter!

Happy Valentine's :)

My Healthy Dessert Snack: Kiwi Fruit

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: food

We all know the importance of eating fruits. For one, fruits contain lots of water which is essential for our human body's survival. Second, fruits contain natural fibres which help us in our bowel movements and this helps us naturally detox the waste from our body. Third, fruits are natural foods. Just think of them as gifts from Mother Nature. For these three simple reasons alone, including fruits in our daily diet is of paramount importance.

But as we all also know, Singapore is famed for its humidity and heat. So what can you eat on a hot day when the sun is blazing its garish rays on you? Think something green, something therapeutic, think kiwi fruit!

Not only is the kiwi fruit rich in vitamins, minerals and flavonoids, studies have shown that it contains more Vitamin C than an orange. To add on, kiwi fruits contain large amounts of Vitamin C, E and A. All these vitamin classes are important for our body to continue functioning at an optimal pace.

Yes, the kiwi fruit is one of my best recommendations and till date, remains my healthy indulgence. You see, I cut up the kiwi fruit into four sections and put them in the refrigerator. After a few hours, I take them and treat myself to a cool, soft, savory kiwi fruit snack. For the more adventurous, you may wish to put your sliced up kiwi fruit in the freezer and then have a kiwi fruit ice cream. So what are you waiting for? Head down to your nearest supermarket and get your very own kiwi fruit afternoon snack delight today.

Bon appetite!

My Healthy Dessert Snack: High Fibre Cheese Cake

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: food

If you've always loved cheese cakes, here's definitely news for you to cheer! Forget about the normal run-of-the-mill cheese cakes like New York cheese cakes, walnut cheese cakes, blueberry cheese cakes and the Japanese cheese cakes. These cheese cakes are notorious for being fattening diet-wreckers. After all, all cheese cakes contain cream cheese and it is this ingredient that helps us pile on the calories and put on weight.

Hanging out with my friend in town today, I decided to have a cheat day and indulge in dessert. And that was how i discovered the newest cheese cake cousin in town. Presenting the high fibre cheese cake from Secret Recipe.

high_fibre_cheese_cake_img

From its very name, one can instantly guess that it is not the normal cheese cake one is used to eating. This is the healthy version that contains fat-free or low-fat cream cheese. Sinking my teeth into the cheese cake, I could pick out the ingredients that went into making it. I tasted the high-fibre grains, seeds and nuts. In particular, I was munching on the sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, hazelnuts, oats, wheat, almonds, bran flakes, pistachio and raisins. All these are low in trans-fatty acids. It was delightful, without being too rich on the taste. Best of all, the flavour wasn't comprised. Absolutely a perfect treat for the hot afternoon.

This is indeed a wholesome high fibre and healthy choice for cheese cake lovers. Now you can have your cake, eat it and not feel guilty at all. Bon appetite!

My Healthy Meal: Healthy Teriyaki Chicken

Tagged in: food

Guess what I found on a hot Friday afternoon? A quiet cozy eating place tucked in the middle of Bukit Timah serving delectable yet healthy food!

When one thinks of teriyaki chicken, one usually thinks of chicken with loads of sweet marinated sauce over it with sticky Japanese rice or white rice. And the chicken almost always comes with the skin.

Half expecting my teriyaki chicken to turn up this way, imagine my pleasant surprise when this dish below was presented to me. WOW!

The skin of the teriyaki chicken was removed. 1 brownie point. Below the slabs of chicken meat was a toasted brown rice cake which was crunchy. 1 more brownie point. Add some leek on top of the chicken (no fries, sorry folks...) and seaweed flakes. Yet another brownie point. And finally, include lots of fresh garden salad (with no dressing)...Kudos...

The taste was absolutely fabulous. I finished every morsel of food that was on the dish. Bon appetit!

My Healthy Meal: Chicken Breast Kway Teow Soup Lunch

Tagged in: food

I always patronise the Redhill Hawker Centre after training on Saturday afternoons for my lunch. It has become a weekly ritual that the couple selling chicken rice can spot me coming from a distance away. Without having to mention or order anything, they will know what I will be ordering.

Yes, it's always kway teow soup (果条汤 or guo tiao soup) with chicken breast meat and lots of vegetables. All this for only $3.50. And as I'm a regular, I do detect some extra chicken breast meat and heaps of vegetables (there's more at the bottom of the bowl!)

Even though I eat this every Saturday for lunch, I still find it yummy...Like it or not, it has become part of my meal lifestyle. In fact, you can cheat your way thin.

I Feel Really Blessed

Besides receiving heartfelt testimonials and words of grateful thanks from my clients for helping them achieve their fitness goals and playing a pivotal role in their lives, I think the next best accolade is getting a surprise from time to time. Yes, one of my female clients made my day by giving me two buns which she baked herself after the training session.

It is really the thought that counts. A simple gesture in itself, it certainly goes a long way to show that when you shower kindness to others, goodness returns itself in another form. What goes around comes around. Eating the two buns (the one on the top is the tuna bun and the one at the bottom is the cheese bun with rosemary), a sense of love and gratification surrounds me. Thank you. I will continue to touch more lives in whatever little ways I can J
