According to Chinese tradition, it’s the seventh day of the Chinese New Year (人日) and that means it’s everyone’s birthday today. And to sweeten the birthday celebrations, I’m being featured in the local press again this month for the second time!

Appearing in the Mandarin daily papers, Lianhe Wanbao (联合晚报) is a first for me as the past few press mentions were all in English. And I must give myself due credit for translating all the texts and instructions into Mandarin :)

The article takes a new slant in that it discusses an age-old issue – the lack of exercise in people during the festive season and challenges readers to seek a new resolve to start exercising. If I can summarise the three major excuses people generally give for not exercising – “no time”, “no knowledge” and “no foundation”, the article dispels these as issues that can be dealt with easily and nipped in the bud readily.

Stepping in to offer expert advice is a chosen set of five resistance tube exercises from my recently launched fitness calendar 2012.

Using the resistance tube to exercise offers many pluses, among them the easy portability owing to its light weight (you can even bring it along when you travel) as compared to traditional machines or dumbbells; immense potential to customise any training programme to your own needs (as long as you are creative) as the resistance tube is a all-in-one equipment for every muscle group; and the high-grade latex material used in the manufacturing process which allows it to be stretched and pulled with ease for all ages and genders.

Enough said! It’s time to ditch those excuses and start getting fit with me in this new year!

2011 is fast becoming a year of surprises and even I myself am pleasantly surprised by the way things have turned out beautifully.

Working behind the scenes for the past two months with nary any hint of what’s going to surface anytime soon is the birth of my newest baby in December.

Just released hot from the printer’s oven is my very own fitness calendar 2012. Termed “Simply Fitness with Lionel Lim”, I believe it is the first time in Singapore a fitness calendar has been launched.

In this calendar is a careful selection of 12 of the most effective exercises one can do anytime, anywhere with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions. Based on exercises I created from using the resistance tube, the notion of exercise is that it is indeed easy, fun and rewarding.

Here's a sample from Jul 2012 (my favourite month) teaching you how to do bicep curls with the
resistance tube.

Published to thank my corporate, school and personal clients for their unwavering support over the past year, I also see this fitness calendar as a culmination of all my hard work over the years.

With the generous support of my sponsors and close friends, this fitness calendar is now no longer a metaphysical dream, but a physical entity I’m holding in my hands for all to see :)

PS: Some of you have asked me if you can order this calendar. The answer is definitely. For all readers out there who would like to extend this gift of fitness to those around you through this calendar, please email me with the no of copies you require. Thanks!

Amazing Fitness Resistance Tube Workout

Many times in life, it’s not about thinking. Rather, it’s about doing. Because once you have done it, you are already a winner. For this reason alone, I applaud the Amazing ladies who rose up to the challenge, sweated it out and joined me for the Resistance Tube Fitness Workout today.

If you have been following my blog, today’s fitness workout is a natural extension of the Amazing Lifestyles 2011.

For those of you who are new, allow me to share. The Amazing Lifestyles Pageant 2011, one of its kind in Singapore and the region, is not another run of the mill beauty pageant. As the name suggests, only contestants weighing at least 80kg and having a big personality are eligible.

In a world where the notion of 'beauty' is often associated with their slimmer counterpart sisters, the participants have proved that size is never an issue with them. Run for the second straight year after a resounding success last year, the Amazing Lifestyles Pageant 2011 returns on a larger scale with more participants this year.

What is special about the Resistance Tube Fitness Workout is that it’s based on the principles of the resistance tube. And I personally came up with the exercises which the Amazing ladies did.

Using the resistance tube which is an inexpensive, light and highly versatile companion, the Amazing ladies worked up a sweat exercising while having fun at the same time working out their various muscle groups.

When one speaks of fitness in general, one generally thinks of lifting weights. But when one speaks of fitness for ladies, we know most do not want to build huge, chunky muscles. Instead, they aspire to develop lean, toned muscles.

A perfect companion for the modern woman, the resistance tube will help the ladies develop toned arms, build muscle strength and definition, engage in better balance, coordination and conditioning; and radiate their full ‘sensuality’.

With the generous sponsorship from Sanctband Singapore which donated the resistance tubes, the Amazing ladies were in for a non-stop one-hour heart-pumping, adrenalin-rising workout.

Do not underestimate the seemingly harmless tube. If used correctly, it can be just as lethal a workout as the normal machine weights or free weights. This is because we are using resistance while exercising with the tubes. And the pulling or lifting motions, often against gravity, helps guarantee the muscles achieve the necessary pump.

Following me on every move and step, I was pleased no one was left behind. Encouragement was in the air – both from myself and from the ladies themselves. Talk about team spirit. Alternating between the resistance tube and bodyweight exercises, there were surprises in store for all.

Presenting them each with certificate of achievement, three Amazing Ladies were also named Ms Amazing Fitness 2011 and walked away with a gym ball each.

But in my eyes, you are all winners in your own right. All of you rock!

5 Fitness Training Lessons From A Gym Veteran

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: fitness

It’s not often you get to see a silver-haired uncle in the gym pumping iron. You can tell from the lines on his face, sunken eyes and slightly dwarfed frame that he is well past his prime. But there’s something so different about him compared to the rest of the nondescript young boys. For one, he still has the built and fervour.

While waiting for my client to catch his breath, Uncle came forward to chat with us. And it turned out to be the most inspirational life lessons regarding fitness I have listened to thus far.

Since most of you will never have the chance to meet Uncle and learn from him, and since I’m in a generous mood, I’ll encapsulate the essence of his sharing in this blog post. Uncle is the true gym veteran.

If you like what I shared, drop me a comment and let me know :)

Lesson 1: Fitness Is For Life

I cannot help but agree 100% with Uncle that fitness is for life. He remarked that in his years of training, he has seen so many people drop out because of a lack of consistency. Uncle is the epitome of this mantra he holds dear. For the record, he started training at the age of 19 years old and he’s now nearing his 80th birthday! More interestingly, he was among the same few who trained with Tan Howe Liang, Singapore’s first Olympic medal winner.

Consistency is key to doing anything in life. The same applies to fitness. You cannot exercise as and when you want to and yet expect to see results. That’s also why when I first do fitness consultations with prospects, among the first few questions I pose is the commitment level. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Similarly, there is no magic pill for you to take and transform overnight into a dreamboat hunk or sexy babe.

Lesson 2: Lift According To Your Ability

Shaking his head while sharing this, Uncle remarked that he has seen scores of guys lift beyond their own ability only to result in injuries.

As much as we want to challenge ourselves and push beyond the limit, we should also know our own threshold. It’s good to set new milestones for ourselves so as to seek continuous improvement but expecting a giant leap from 10kg to 30kg at the snap of one’s finger is never going to happen.

Lesson 3: Move Around Constantly

Keeping our bodies in constant motion cannot be overemphasized. After one set, we should not sit and rest. Instead, we should stand up and move around  so as to keep the body in constant motion. This is while waiting for the next set.

Sitting and resting relegates the body to a resting mode which is not ideal for maximum muscle gains.

Lesson 4: Train For Strength And Definition

Uncle validates my own school of thought. Unless you are going to be the next WWF wrestler or bodybuilder, no one in this new age and time still trains to be an Incredible Hulk. Gone are the days when the Arnold look was deemed the zenith of macho-ness.

A fabulous beach body these days is much closer to one that is chiseled, with the right upper body and lower body proportions. Besides this, it’s also about the true strength that you can unleash within.

Lesson 5: Focus On Major Muscle Groups

Like how I train my own clients for personal training, I choose to focus on the major muscle groups. Uncle concurs that it’s foolhardy to keep training the minor muscles and neglecting the major ones. Ironically, when you train the major muscles, the minor muscles are also trained in the process.

The minor muscles are what we in the fitness fraternity term the vanity muscles. Yes, they look good. But at the end of the day, should you neglect the major muscles, they will hit you hard. The major muscles are the ones that support our body frame. Do the important tasks in life once and you will be rewarded in the future. Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Appearing In Cozycot Magazine

As some wise man once said, good things never happen alone. They always come in pairs. So do not blink your eyes and do a double take.

My eyes certainly didn't as I saw a familiar face inside the inaugural issue of Cozycot's hard copy magazine. Then I remembered it was a photoshoot picture which I did for them some months back and they asked me for some simple, but practical health and fitness tips.

Here's what I shared: "Wake up 15 minutes earlier every day to exercise. You'll banish body fat forever!"

Very true. Instead of thinking how we can become a slave to exercise by having to spend 30 minutes or more huffing and puffing away, why not invest just 15 minutes a day and do something you enjoy? Once you approach exercise from a fun angle, your perspective changes and it no longer becomes a chore.

Exercise comes in many forms. It doesn't have to be running on the treadmill or using the elliptical machine. Any form of physical activity that gets you perspiring is considered 'exercise'. So if you enjoy brisk walking, skipping, stair climbing or swimming, by all means go ahead!

Better still, if you can get your family or loved ones involved as well...

Cheers to good health, everybody :)

My Health And Fitness Video - Cheers To Wellness

Posted by: lionel

Tagged in: fitness

Mention the term 'wellness' and there is a high chance that many people still associate it with slimming centres, fad diets and spa retreats. Well, I don't blame them as such images stick in our minds long after we have seen them thanks to clever advertising and celebrity endorsements.

In a world where wellness means more than that, it is unfortunate that people still have a misconception. If one could easily lose weight by zipping in and out of the slimming centres or swallowing a pill easily obtainable from the shelves, then all the fitness centres, gyms and parks should long be gone by now.

In an age where our quality of life has become top priority for many, if not all, there are links between the emotional, environmental and spiritual factors when it comes to wanting to lead a quality lifestyle.

Besides all these and perhaps more, it also means where I'm currently at and what are the gaps I must bridge in order to attain that
quality lifestyle.

Without the fad diets that only result in weight rebounds once one gets off that diet; without the slimming centres which is more of water loss retention than anything else; and without the exorbitant spa retreats that burn a hole in the pocket, is there hope?

Of course there is! Seek inspiration from these guys and girls who have done it the natural way! I salute them as they have fun while embarking on their health and fitness journey to wellness :)

New Weights At Clubfitt Gyms

Posted by: lionel

If you’ve always thought the public gyms were the poorer cousins of the private gyms, perhaps it’s time to rethink that again.

Situated conveniently around the island, the 15 (and soon more to come I believe) Clubfitt gyms have been slowly, but surely undergoing a renewal of sorts of its own.

Imagine our pleasant surprise today at Toa Payoh Clubfitt Gym when both my client and myself saw gleaming, new weights. Like a kid finding new candy bars in the store, it was indeed a welcome sight.

clubfitt_gym_barbells_weight_img
The new barbell weights on the rack

clubfitt_gym_dumbbells_weight_img
The new rubberised dumbells

In a world where the old is always discarded when the new is in, we particularly appreciate it that the old weights (which by now have become slightly rusty) have not been removed. Instead, they are still serving their loyal users, alongside the newer batch of barbells and dumbbells. So now you have two racks – one rack housing the old weights made entirely of steel and another rack housing the rubberised new weights.

Then a few days later when I dropped by Delta Clubfitt Gym for another fitness training, I too saw the same new weights there. I guess the upgrading of the gym facilities should be a common sight across all 15 Clubfitt Gyms.

The renewal of weights is a positive sign of even better things to come in the future. After all, fitness is for all and not only for the rich. So for those who are reluctant to sign up for a private club membership, there’s always your good old Clubfitt Gym friend to fall back upon. And if you do see me there conducting personal training, do come up and say hi :)

Almost one month has passed and the local fitness world is still abuzz with much disbelief. How could such a freak incident happen? The odds were like one in a million.

The headlines scream "Fitness Trainer's Jaw Shattered By 200kg Weights".

fitness_trainer_gym_injury_img

Naturally, with such a sensational headline, one would be tempted to read on, right?

A seasoned personal trainer with eight years of experience under his belt, Jonathan was doing leg presses in the gym. Fate has it that when he was about to get off the machine, the weights were believed to have slipped off the locks, shattering his jaw completely.

On hindsight, one would immediately point the finger of blame to the gym club management. Why didn’t they conduct routine checks on the machines to ensure they were in good, working condition?

Without learning the truth about what happened and just reading about it from newspaper reports and the daily tabloids, some would certainly draw the conclusion that the gym is a high risk potential area for everyone and one should avoid it.

Yes, granted that in any exercise which we undertake, if we don’t stretch to warm up prior to it or fail to use the machine as it is designed to be used, then the odds of getting injured is increased multifold.

If you ask me, why do I even bother to write this blog entry about this freak incident? It’s because of the erroneous reports that are circulating.

When I learnt the inside story of what exactly happened that led to the injury, I cannot use the same pair of sympathetic glasses which I had been wearing before this on Jonathan.

To a large extent, Jonathan deserved it. He misused the machine. In fact, he abused it.

A smith machine is designed to allow one to train certain body parts, notably the chest and shoulders. Would anybody in the right frame of mind use it to train his legs?

If there’s anyone who would, it would only be Jonathan.

It is highly ironic that a personal trainer who had taken courses in gym safety lay on the bench of a smith machine, propped his legs onto the bar of it and moved the bar up and down to train his legs, in particular his thighs and butt.

If this is not stupidity, what is? If you want to train your thighs and butt, do squats, leg presses or lunges.

And if you ask me again, I’m not surprised at all he got badly injured. If we stick to using machines or weights as they are designed, we will be much better off, both physique wise and health wise.

Train well, my friends. And most importantly, train safely. If you need a pair of safe hands to spot you or professional help to guide you in your gym routines, speak to my team now :)
