It’s ironic to note that as our society progresses, the number of people suffering from back pain increases. This is something which I foresee will only aggravate in the years to come as most of us are huddled up perpetually behind our laptops and are subjected to carry heavy briefcases and document files.

Add to that stress on our back, the perils of a new office shift and there I found a new group of fans in the employees from Wilmar International today who attended my ‘Eliminating Back Pain’ lunchtime talk.

Walking into the new premises at Neil Road was like walking back into history as the façade of the buildings were conserved shophouses. But once I stepped in, the modernity of the inside, complete with meeting rooms and offices, reminded me of the corporate world. With the company products proudly displayed impressively on shelves, alongside accolades in the form of trophies awarded from the around the world; it was obvious Wilmar International is Asia’s leading agribusiness group which operates across all four continents.

Sharing that they just completed the move recently, the staff were more than happy to pick up a tip or two on eliminating back pain. By popular demand, the contractor was even summoned down to the meeting room to listen to my talk at mid-point upon request of some of the staff. This was so as I suggested incorporating ergonomically design chairs
for the staff and making sure the height of the computer monitors were at the eye level of each staff. Just these two simple tips alone would go a long way to help provide more comfort to everyone sitting behind a desk.

Before we talk about the cure for back pain, we should revise the fundamentals and examine the structure of the human back and the various parts it comprises. The more intimately well we know our human body, in particular the back, the better we will be in a position to put in place certain measures to strengthen it. Why talk about cures when we can prevent it from occurring in the first place?

For those of you who have attended any of my talks or workshops, you know none of them will end without any practical elements. I'm an active person who enjoys weaving in hands-on activities in all my programmes. Ditto for this back pain talk.

So there you have it - a potent combination of shoulder massages and backward bends :)

Eliminating Back Pain Talk At First Gulf Bank

I’m back at Raffles Place today, walking among the hustle and bustle of the lunch crowd. And I’m headed for First Gulf Bank, located at UOB Plaza to give a talk on ‘Eliminating Back Pain’.

One of my health and fitness talk topics, companies wanting to help their staff better handle back pain issues have been on the rise lately. This is not surprising as most of our waking hours are spent in the office – think typing away furiously at our desktops or laptops; carrying heavy meeting files or that briefcase; or our tendency to slouch in our chairs when we sit. Whatever the reason is, I was glad to witness the enthusiasm of the small but energetic crowd today.

In life, there will always be people who choose to go for their lunch or shop around town. But there will always also be people who will be more than willing to better invest their time to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge. I truly applaud the second group of people. That’s because when we continue to learn, we continue to grow.

Standing in the boardroom dressed in comfy gym wear and seeing the rest in executive wear (some of the men were in ties as well) brought back memories of the past. I was once like them working in a similar environment.  I can relate to back pain very well as long hours of sitting in front of the computer and rushing tight deadlines were the twin evils that gave me stiff shoulders, aches and pains.

But if you think back pain cannot be cured by yourself, think again. Unless it is a chronic back pain which lasts for more than 12 weeks, normal back pain can be and should be healed naturally.

It is the worst kept secret that our lower backs and necks are often the victims.

I would recommend the right stretching exercises to loosen up the muscles and further prescribe gym exercises to strengthen the weakened back. With a combination of the right methods, one can definitely kiss neck pain goodbye.

To show how easy it was, I got the group to massage their colleagues. Initially, all were hesitant and shy. But once someone got into massage mode and started squeezing the shoulder blades (which are one of the most strained areas of our back), others followed suit. When it came to round two of massage, all I could see were smiling faces and compliments of how comfortable it felt.

Just by giving each other a massage or simply rotating your shoulder blades, one is already on the way to eliminating neck pain.

Have fun practising your new skills, everybody :)

Eliminating Back Pain Talk At Pfizer

I can still recall some of those days when I was an ex-employee and kept complaining about back pain owing to long hours of seating at the desk and working at the PC.

Well, though those complaints are now long gone, but I know many office workers are facing what I used to face.

Blame it on our bad sitting posture. Blame it on the unnecessary stress placed on our shoulders. Blame it on the boss who keeps giving us unreasonable deadlines and more projects.

Whoever or whatever you want to start pointing finger to, remember you can never run away from back pain.

To put it simply, back pain can be generally classified into four segments – neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain and tailbone pain. When the pain persists for more than 12 weeks, it’s called a chronic pain. If it comes and lasts for a short while, we name that acute pain. If it comes off and on, we term it intermittent pain.

Back pain is perhaps one of the most common grouses we hear our families, friends and colleagues complain. Well, this is not uncommon. Anyone standing, sitting or squatting in the same position for prolonged periods of time will and can be subjected to back pain.

This was what I shared with my audience at Pfizer Singapore together in my inaugural back pain talk. Largely an extension of my health and fitness workshop series, back pain is fast becoming a pet topic for many organizations which start to pay more attention to staff welfare and invest in ergonomical furniture for their employees.

As our back is one of the largest muscles of our bodies and especially since it is used to support our spine, it is of utmost importance to strengthen our back muscles.

Strengthening our back muscles can come in many forms, ranging from regular exercise to adopting a proper lifting posture when carrying heavy items.

No talk of mine is complete with any form of audience participation. Whether it is stretching backwards or touching one's toes or massaging your colleague, it's all in the name of good fun...while giving our back that stretch it so long deserves.

And responding to the popular requests from the audience, I demonstrated two floor body stretches which everyone can do anytime, anywhere...even in the comfort of your living room.

The first is the bridge, followed by superman fly. I chose these two as they are the most basic. Once you have mastered the two basic stretches, then we can move on to more intermediate ones. And please treat your back well :)
