Your Blog To Looking & Feeling Good

Build Confidence Through Fitness, Grooming & Communication
It’s the new release of my series of health and fitness talks. What I have done is to blend together several topics together into one single series, simply and aptly titled “Health and Wellness” for the participants from KHL Marketing Asia Pacific.

If you ask me, there’s a significant difference between health and wellness. Often mentioned in the same breath, the two are not on equal terms. Health is but a subset of wellness as wellness encompasses everything. And physical wellness (aka health) is just a small part of it.

Putting things in perspective, we’ve all heard of numerous calls to do something about our worklife balance. But hearing it is not good enough. Many a times, when we hear something too often, we become numb to it.

Feeling incredibly relaxed as it’s one of my favourite pet topics, I chose to challenge them to do something about it instead. And what better way than not to have a thick rule book to follow by, but just 7 simple, but practical and easy to implement tips that everybody can use instantly.

If these 7 tips can help me find balance in my schedule, I’m sure they will work wonders too for your life. Stop worrying and start living!

The New Paper Reports On Amazing Pageant 2012

We are featured in today's New Paper on page 22! The "we" refer to the 5 Amazing Ladies and myself. Very happy for all the girls who stood through the test of time and emerged victorious.

As they always say, we are all winners in our own rights. Victory is sweet...but sweeter is the journey ahead as you never know what plans the great universe has in store for you :)

For Agnes, she never knew she would one day put aside her normal staple of T-shirt and jeans and dazzle along this Amazing journey in a gown, complete with makeup and full-fledged confidence.

I've only these words to say to her: I'm super proud she made it!

After the successful inaugural pageant in 2010, the second installment of the Amazing Pageant attracted more than 50 applications when it was first announced in July 2011. From the first cut of 24 contestants to the crowning of the Amazing Queen on this eventful day of 25 Feb 2012, it was a journey marked with many firsts for all the contestants.

From the onset, I as the events manager, conceptualised the pageant as a learning journey for the girls rather than another run-of-the-mill pageant for contestants.

In a world where the notion of 'beauty' is often associated with their slimmer counterpart sisters, these girls proved that size is never an issue with them. One can count on them for their big personality, open heart and graceful mannerisms.

The Amazing Pageant 2012 provides a unique platform for plus-sized ladies (weighing at least 80kg, regardless of age, race, religion or marital status) to boost their confidence, enhance their networking skills and in the process of it all, find their own voice in society.

Kicking off with a makeover for the 24 semi-finalists to the dual themes of the 1960s era and high fashion look, the girls were treated to an individual photoshoot. Thereafter, the girls selected two photos each to be used for publicity. First up was the Facebook Friendship Competition in which the top two girls who garnered the most number of likes on Facebook would emerge as the Facebook Friendship Princesses. This was followed by the publishing of their very own Amazing Calendar 2012 with each girl being the month’s model.

As is different with other pageants, each step the girls took was a gradual but reassuring one. Monthly workshops on topics such as grooming and poise, fitness, destress, skincare and haircare were also offered complimentary to the girls to help them up their image quotient.

Judged more on their inner qualities and how they performed throughout the seven month period, rather than based on good looks only, resonated with the girls as all earned points simply by turning up, being supportive and participating actively in the activities.

From shy individuals to confident ladies in their very own rights, the transformation was evident as the ten finalists took to the stage at Bukit Timah Plaza in a snazzy talent show in Jan 2012. Each had an option to present a five-minute item of their own choice.

Running up to the finals on 25 Feb 2012, the finalists were engaged in rehearsals and were in deep conversations with the hair and makeup sponsors to look their stunning best on coronation day.

Coronation Day was more than a celebration of success for the girls as the past winners from the inaugural 2010 pageant were also present to crown the new winners and offer their congratulations.

There were 6 titles to be given away - all of which were sponsored by
LionelLim.com. This is the second time I'm sponsoring sashes (the first time being the NTU Hall 6 D&D Cum Pageant 2011).

Amazing Pageant 2012 witnessed a new queen in the form of Amazing Queen 2012, pre-school teacher Agnes Ng who impressed all with her gentle ways, graceful demeanor and winning stature. Next in line were Amazing Princess 2012 Yvonne Seah (executive) and Amazing Beauty 2012 Norin M Kasim (property business). Rounding up the remaining 3 top spots were Amazing Teen 2012 Kristy Lee (entrepreneur), Amazing Friendship 2012 Siti Mawarni Johari (healthcare industry), Amazing Community Ambassador 2012 Angeline Lee (housewife).

The pageant may have ended but for all the girls, the journey ahead will be a different one – bolstered with more amazing feats and moments of glory.

People are like gifts sent to us from the heavens above. Each one of them has made a positive difference in my life and enriched it in a unique manner. Similarly, for these three ladies from the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) who signed up for an evening class of grooming workshop “The Visual Art of Looking Good”.

Coming from different departments but with one single aim, it was a delight to have them in my class tonight.

As an ex-civil servant myself, one of the best perks of being in the service is having an annual training budget which we can use to attend almost any self-improvement courses. For these three ladies, they chose to attend my grooming workshop.

Repaying them for their faith in me, it was fun from the moment they stepped in. Exhibiting excellent chemistry amongst themselves while learning, they stepped into a whole new universe.

If you ask me, it’s easier to share knowledge with participants who are new to the subject as they are like sponges who will absorb and be willing to learn. Juxtapose this with others who have their pre-conceived notions of what works and what does not and are resistant to change.

Visually, we all want to make an impact on others – be it our family, friends, colleagues or suppliers as people tend to take mental notes internally and score others.  Like it or not, our world bases its first impression on that split second. This is true regardless of whether you are hiring, dating, selling or befriending.

And it’s only through exploring new areas will we rediscover ourselves in a new light and let that experience shine through. So while the ladies laughed at themselves, they also learnt about their true body measurements, how to choose the right bra size, read people accurately from the choice of clothes, pick the right colours to wear and build rapport with others with the help of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

If you ask me, I have no preference whether it’s a small cozy group or a large auditorium group. My modus operandi remains the same – to share my knowledge in the most intimate and accessible manner. My lessons are always learn-a-minute, laugh-a-minute as I believe that’s the best environment to learn.

If you too like to create an impactful visual impression, then join these ladies from IDA by clicking here and book a seat for the next run.

Grooming Talk For TAT Petroleum

Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? This often quoted line from Snow White still holds much relevance in our everyday lives. The truth does hurt but knowing the truth allows us to make adjustments and seek improvements.

The mirror is our good friend as it does not lie. And our best friend is the full-length mirror as it shows us in all our glory – both flaws and perfection exemplified. Yet it’s interesting not many of us enjoy looking at ourselves in the mirror.

At TAT Petroleum this afternoon for a grooming talk, I extolled the benefits of the mirror when it comes to understanding one’s body shape. Before we pick a particular style to try on, we must know what flatters us and what does not. Picking the flattering pieces helps boost our confidence and allows us to stand out from the crowd. Picking the wrong pieces only accentuates the wrong areas.

Like it or not, we all have some amount of fat hidden somewhere around the body – it could be in our tummy, thighs, arms or butt. And as we grow older, it just seems harder to expel this fat. Add to the point that despite constant reminders to exercise at least three times a week, many do not citing a lack of time as the most common factor. Summing it all up, that makes it even more important, doubly important to wear the right clothes!

If you would like to know what to wear, then read yourself from the mirror. For all other expert advice, contact me here!

Whether you are a busy executive on the go or a professional speaker like myself, chances are you are never without a modern mobile device like a laptop, ipad or tablet. In an increasingly wired-up world where we need almost instant access to our presentation slides, documents and information from the web, mobility is the key.

In Singapore’s unpredictable weather where it can be sunny one moment and rainy the very next, the last thing I would want is for my precious mobile device to be subjected to the harsh conditions of the weather by carrying it in my arms.

The solution: I need a carrier of some sorts. And if I have a choice, I would want to be seen using a carrier that is stylish, practical and water resistant. These are very valid concerns for any layman.

Introducing the Versatilo. As its name suggests, one of its greatest plus points is its versatility. Touted as the all-in-one bag for the modern executive or professional, the PadTabBag impressed me with its super light weight, generous space and clever innovations. It is also the first ever bag design with dedicated compartment for iPads, tablets and notebooks.

When invited to shoot a series of ads for PadTabBag, I experienced first-hand the inner workings of this new entrant. Particularly pleased was I of the laptop compartment as I was able to store my 17” laptop in there snuggly.

lionel_padtabbag_img

There is also a good play of colours. The classical black exterior (I understand more colours are on the way in the very near future!) is juxtaposed against the bright cheery orange interiors which rely mainly on the velcro-driven safety compartments to keep your stuff secure. And depending on my moods, I can choose to carry it in one of many ways – either as a messenger bag slung across the shoulders, a briefcase or as a backpack (should you choose to unveil the hidden compartment containing the backpack straps).

Always one to testbed new ideas, I was quick to persuade and convince the PadTabBag team that it was more than a bag that meets the eye. Most people would use it hold their tablet or ipad or laptop. But just be a little creative and see what I’ve got? A gym bag!

Yes, by further harnessing the full potential of PadTabBag, it can coolly make the transition from office to gym effortlessly. In fact, I had little difficulty stuffing my entire gym gear (shoes included) inside the bag!

Colour Analysis Talk For IBM Singapore

Billed as a full-house event by the organizers, it was truly heartening to see all the seats in the room taken. Plus the fact that some who came a little later had to stand at the back. But whether they came seating or standing, the staff at IBM Singapore was in for a lunchtime treat courtesy of my colour analysis talk.

A specialized segment in grooming itself, colour analysis seeks to help participants and clients find their best colours to wear. The reasoning is simple – when we wear our best colours, we look younger and more pleasing to the eye. In short, we glow.

Initially apprehensive to volunteer themselves for the demonstration, the apprehension melted away instantaneously when one brave lady stood up and walked to the front to become my first model. And you can guess what happened thereafter…Response was doubly quick and queue numbers had to be given out.

And even after the hour talk was over, some of the ladies lingered on in their seats and wanted to be tested in private, away from the eyes of their colleagues. And of course, I was more than happy to oblige to analyse all of them.

It’s gratifying to see so many happy smiles leaving the room today. And no prizes for guessing what the participants will be doing next – they will be planning their shopping trips in the next few days with similar skintoned colleagues at the newly opened Changi City Point, which is a stone’s throw away :)

Colour Analysis Workshop For Keppel FELS

Tagged in: grooming

It’s interesting how all of us have our own preconceived notions of what looks good on us. This is perhaps a universal truth that I’ve undiscovered.

To be honest, this can be a double-edged sword as it may or may not always work in our favour. Because of our preferred choices, we make decisions based on our gut feel which may not always be the right choice. And the actions are perpetuated over and over again.

This is yet another classical example which I always share with my participants. Likewise, for the ladies in my colour analysis workshop today from Keppel FELS.

colours_analysis_workshop_keppel_fels_img

Because of our pre-conceived notions of what looks good on us, our wardrobes are inevitably filled with most items in that colour. And this very often turns out to be the colour black. In the minds of many ladies, they feel black is a slimming colour and is the best option for them to wear if they want to appear slimmer. And thus they stock up on black dresses, black blouses, black tops and black jackets.

But wait, before you shop for more black items, ponder and think about it. Is black really the colour that flatters your skintone? Do you shine in black or pale next to someone else wearing another colour? Is black the one and only colour for you?

Very often, when participants go through some thought-provoking questions which I ask them, they become half convinced.

And to make them fully convinced, I work my magic through my colour swatches and drapes in my colour analysis workshop. This thrilled the ladies as they understood first-hand how it worked. And more importantly, they saw the results from the eyes of their other colleagues in the audience who gave constructive feedback on which colour shone and which colour didn’t.

keppel_fels_colour_analysis_workshop_img

colour_analysis_workshop_keppel_fels_img

In a world filled with colours, I strongly encourage my readers to explore the universe of colours besides those you always wear. Because one fine day, you will realize, as my participants past and present have from image consultancy, that a professional image is created each time and every time you meet an external customer (think a client) or an internal customer (think your colleague or boss).

If you are ready to shine in your best colours and get dressed for success in your career, relationships and confidence building, drop me an email and let me be the beacon in your grooming journey :)
